cursor movement is not tied to memory-mapped devices, and even old DOS
Software (MS Word and friends) were derivative of CP/M software where
they also have to live with serial terminals. they (for the most part)
used only BIOS funtions for screen control.

Well, yes, serial terminals had (depending on the model) quite sophisticated means of cursor control, however this is something that on the DOS level needs to be supported. And there are/were many different and largely incompatible sets of terminal control codes out there...
