It is eons since I have used Quattro Pro (for DOS or otherwise) and I don't think there was another popular spreadsheet format back in the mid '90s, IIRC.

Excel was just getting popular due to the spread of the first MS Office version, using its own proprietary file format.

And contemporary DOS programs like SuperCalc or MultiPlan used their own file format, but always were able to both import and export Lotus 1-2-3 and Symphony .wk* files, not the least due to the fact that Lotus (later IBM) very early on had published the format description and hence had become the de-facto industry standard, at least for spreadsheet data exchange.

That worked for everyone reasonably well until Microsoft decided to drop the ability to even read .wl* files in Microsoft Excel a few version ago...
