Actually, DOS had a lot to offer. On such a machine it was quite fast, compared to a Unix system with a blown X11 for graphics. On DOS there were way more small and specialized little programs available, some quite unique. I think you cannot compare the two. Linux has its advantages, but DOS does too. It's all about the software and the use cases. (Think about computer games.)
