I don't really mess around with physical floppies much anymore. But I briefly re-tried my Sony USB Floppy Disk Drive (model MPF88E) yesterday (Dell Inspiron laptop from 2009/2010, Penryn 45nm or whatever) with some older 2004/2005 (heavily-modified) FreeDOS floppies. It still works. Of course, you need a suitable BIOS. (But I didn't try reformatting or anything low-level either.)
