Greetings! Old PC hacker here...back to the original MS-DOS, and some Z-80 fun before that. Haven't played with DOS in ages but really enjoying the FreeDOS experience.
I'm running 1.2 on Virtualbox. I need to add the "raw" flag to the boot when installing from CD, but afterwards the system boots fine without that. However, using FDIMPLES, I'm receiving a stream of "Error while extracting" while trying to install things from the DEVEL tree. Strangely, I installed the editor Elvis just fine and it works great...but trying to install OW gives me "Error while extracting" for each file. All the directories are created, but they're empty. FDIMPLES reports "11 files extracted, 1773 errors". PERL reports the same (different file counts, of course). Each of "Error while extracting" messages ends with [-4] which I assume is a DOS error code. Some things I checked: - not out of disk space (I used a 500MB disk and 409MB is free) - CD seems to work fine since I can install other packages - and the really bizarre thing...doing the exact same steps under VMWare Fusion (instead of Virtualbox), and things work fine. My sequence of steps: - boot a fresh VM (128MB of RAM, 500MB disk) - install from CD (including partition of disk, formatting of C:). I installed full + sources. - reboot and boot off hard drive - run FDIMPLES, install ELVIS (works fine) - run FDIMPLES, install OW or PERL, and I get the -4 "Error while extracting" errors on Virtualbox. Don't get them on VMware. I looked at the FDIMPLES source but my PASCAL is weak to non-existent. Theory: related to the need to include the 'raw' parameter when installing from CD? FreeDOS not interpreting the CD drive correctly perhaps? On a separate note, what do I want to look at to use a larger font or more columns/rows on my "virtual monitor"? That was part of why I tried Virtualbox after VMware Player, besides portability to machines I don't have VMware licensed on. The underlying physical hardware is MacOS.
