Your approach would only work in case "just" the DNS server info wouldn't be properly set.
But the really strange thing is that he states that he doesn't even get a proper response when setting a static IP on the host, with ipconfig still claiming that it doesn't get info from a DHCP server. That indicates that there is rather something more basic amiss...
