I am pretty sure that this all goes to a simple point: video resolution. Arachne is using graphic mode (640x480, IIRC), while the default DOS prompt is in text mode (80x25 of 8x14 blocks, that is 640×350 pixels). The video adapter embedded in your laptop is probably designed to do nicely stretched video output for some resolutions, but not others.
A possible idea could be to try to play with different video modes for the DOS prompt, for example does using 'mode co80,43' or 'mode co80,50' still produces such 'console in small window' effect? There are also various tools that allow to set the console prompt to a graphic video mode, so it should just be a matter to find one that looks acceptable. Note, that many applications will reset the video screen to the default 80x25 text mode after they quit, so you might need to re-reset the video mode every now and then (or use some kind of a TSR that forces a graphic mode all the time).
