This is actually how it already works. FDNPKG uses 'categories' of
software, and puts software there at install time. There is not much
categories, only four:
  DEVEL
  DRIVERS
  GAMES
  PROGS

I described it (lightly) here: http://www.freedos.org/wiki/index.php/Package

The location where software of each category will be installed is
configurable via the FDNPKG configuration file, so you can decide for
example to put devel stuff into C:\DEVEL\, and games into D:\MYSTUFF\GAMES\.

I decided on such implementation after asking around for opinions on
this list back in 2012 (see the thread "FreeDOS packaging rules / paths").

But the question now is different (I took the liberty to change the
subject of this message accordingly): where would you put applications
that need to be reachable from %PATH% ? My idea would be to install them
like any other applications - somewhere in one of the categories
mentioned above, but adding a batch 'link' to them into a special
folder, let's say in %FREEDOS%\LINKS.

But it's not necessarily a brilliant idea either, so I'm open (as usual)
to any suggestions.

Mateusz
