To make sure any program will run, the desktop is started from a batch file
loop. If the icon on the desktop is configured for a normal program the
desktop will terminate and pass the program name to execute to the looping
batch file. When the normal program terminates the batch file will restart
the desktop. If you select "Exit" from the desktop it will terminate the
looping batch file and you are back at the command prompt. Test the XFDOS
distribution for details.

I use djgpp, the system() command allows to execute normal DOS programs from
the desktop too.
