In my ThinkPad 380Z, running pure FreeDOS, the key Fn-F8 toggles
between the center shrunk screen you mentioned and the "full"
screen.

Note that this is *not* marked in the keyboard.

I used quotes around full because it's not fully full :-)  Two
narrow vertical stripes, about 8 millimiters in width, remain
unused on both sides of the screen. I think there are even
narrower unused strips on the screen top and bottom as well.

You just have to use Fn-F8 once. Next time you boot, the machine
remembers the configuration, and starts with the full screen.
