It's hard to remember all the different versions. Seems that "9.20" is
the latest "stable" while 9.22 is "beta". Anything else seems to be
unfinished "alpha", and I don't see sources for any of those on
SourceForge.

In particular, I did remember that 7ZA920.ZIP was the last (static?)
official build of the Win32 console version of the archiver that works
under Japheth's HX. Maybe others (7zr.exe?) work too but probably need
third-party MSVCRT.DLL, which I've not tested under DOS.

Hence I suggest sticking with 7ZA920.ZIP or some version of p7zip
9.20.1 (despite bugs), at least under DOS. The OP has mentioned he
prefers to use DOS versions in lieu of other OSes. (Yes, the easy
answer is always to use another OS, heh. It's a valid solution for
some people but not for everyone.)
