The adventure continues...
I used to think I knew DOS, etc., having gotten started with PCs in the 80s.
Even built a Novell network for a small college by trial and error plus
occasional reading of manuals. But all that must have leaked out of this aging
brain.
The networkbook65.iso failed on my virtual machine so...
I searched for a floppy image of the netbootdisk without success so...
I looked at winimage & magiciso but they both required a working floppy to
start with so...
I went to an old XP box with a floppy drive, reconnected the drive, and tried
unsuccessfully to format two different floppies so...
I created an empty floppy image for VMWare, booted the vm and was able to do a
format /s of A: (yea! a measure of success!) so...
I ftp'd the netbootdisk contents to the vm, complete with proper directory
structure and ran MakeDisk - to discover that the batch file
for some reason doesn't like the vm's A:.
The next task is to customize the batch file so that it will complete and
(possibly) allow a boot from the floppy image.
I suspect that this is not what y'all meant but I'm used to taking spaghetti
routes when working in DOS. If you have a more direct route to get to a
bootable floppy image I'd love to hear it.

Neither is a problem. VMWare can simulate a floppy and
you can directly use the floppy IMAGE download of the
netbootdisk for that...
