How are you reading the posts? I read the list in GMail via Firefox, and while the default is to post a reply at the top of the message, you aren't forced to it. It's easy enough to selectively quote and intersperse comment. I've been in groups like this long enough doing so is a reflex. Top posing is the annoying norm in MS Outlook, along with posting in HTML.
