Hello, I recently installed the FreeDOS 1.1 cd to an old laptop with a 6 gig hd a minimal linux all configured to access my email and with all the bookmarks I need to quickly find help {when/if} the next time I bork my desktop... I decided I wanted to install dos in part because I found an old stash of dos floppies and I wanted to see if I could get any of the games working...
I had a few problems, and had to reinstall a few times. I was unable to restore a working copy of freedos from a clonezilla image. (I've got it the way I want it now. But I'd like to be able to back it up with some chance of restoring it, if needed. So I've a few questions. 1) When, at the end of the install, the installer asks what to do with the bootsector AKA "Volume Boot Record". Is it the same thing as when a linux installer allows me to install grub to the 1st superblock of the "/" partition??? {it seams to have the same effect} 2) Is there a way to make that happen for a restored backup of a fully configured copy of freedos... I mean Like if I made a boot floppy and used it to do something like " A:> sys c: ", would that have the same effect?? {If it would I'd be a lot more comfortable with using tar or even mc to make a "boot floppy" supported file back up of it, than to repeat the problem I had with clonezilla.} 3) you wouldn't happen to know if using clonezilla's expert mode to de-select cloning the "hidden data between MBR and 1st partition" when making a clone of a working bootable {via chainloader} freedos partition, would result in a clone that wouldn't trash the existing MBR when it was restored, but would still include whatever freedos specific code needed for freedos to boot when chainloaded from grub??? -- | ~^~ ~^~ | <?> <?> Joe (theWordy) Philbrook | ^ J(tWdy)P | \___/ <<jtw...@ttlc.net>> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
