I am the author of the UIDE caching disk/CD/CDV driver, available from <http://johnson.tmfc.net/dos/driver.html> (Johnson Lam is my "partner" since 2004 and hosts my drivers on his site). UIDE is part of the "base" FreeDOS system, thus it is also available from <http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/cdrom/uide>. Both sites provide the latest drivers, now dated 23-Mar-2012. Bernd's comments (above) are correct with one exception: UIDE is able to run "ancient" IDE/PATA over ISA/PCI, or any "ancient" CD/ DVD drives, better than the OAKCDROM.SYS or VIDE-CDD.SYS drivers. They do not provide CD/DVD caching (HUGE speed improvement!), nor do they use UltraDMA I-O, present in all CD/DVD drives from about 1999 onward. UIDE does both. Any questions re: UIDE usage/installation/etc., feel free to send me an E-Mail, and I shall be glad to help! Jack R.
