I tried but it seems not to work...
I'm using VmPlayer under win7 64
and I added in ... VMware\preferences.ini 
pref.autoFitFullScreen = "fitHostToGuest"
(tried also 
pref.autoFitFullScreen = "fitGuestToHost")

Have you tried successfully?
