Hi, >>> 2. How do you glue the out fragments then ???
I have no idea HOW the smartness of pbzip2 works but I do believe them that they are only 0.2% worse than non-parallel bzip2 size performance. Works for me and it is just VERY cool to have a factor 2, 3, 4 or 6 speed gain on a CPU with that number of cores... :-p >> It works fine in Linux already > > What useful and unique work can it do ??? Mencoder can recompress videos. For example I can use it to read a DVD (up to 8 GB of data) and generate a single file with at most 2 GB of data for any sort of SD or USB media player or netbook so I can watch that movie without having to carry that bulky DVD (drive). >> Because in practice downloading 1000 pics from your cam >> in DOS will be slower than making 1000 thumbs in 1 core. > > Right ... there is space for improvements of DOS USB drivers. The next problem is that FAT filesystems suck when you try to create 2 to 6 JPEG thumbs at the same time while not yet knowing how big each of them will be. Not to mention the big cluster size and the inefficient disk I/O etc. None of that was ever made for multi tasking. >> First add NCQ support, RAID support > > Why ? Because you want not only the CPU but also the disk fast and because video editing is not about linear read speed or other relatively simple forms of disk performance. To answer your other mail: Linux supports NCQ for SATA disks since kernel version 2.6.23 which was in 2007... >> a filesystem like ext2 or even much better, a >> write-combining cache, accelerated graphics, surround >> digital audio... And then you have Linux again anyway > > Nothing of those is needed (fixing 4 GiB problem appreciated) I take the freedom to disagree with you here and use DOS and Linux separately for their respective fields for which they are proven platforms :-) Eric ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get a FREE DOWNLOAD! and learn more about uberSVN rich system, user administration capabilities and model configuration.
