Well, I was hoping it would give some hints, not necessarily that it

Hmmm, that's not ideal. You should be able to get FreeDOS already with
your DOSEMU. Typically you'll want to install the distro's package
(Ubuntu -> Multiverse, Fedora -> search RPMfind). But you can also get
pre-compiled binaries (for DOSEMU and the FreeDOS add-on) at
http://www.dosemu.org to manually install. It should "just work"
(fast)!
