@Bernd and a quick update to all freedos-users, You were absolutely spot on with your assessment of my previous FAT configuration, re strange file system corruption. Given the vintage of the 430CDS I had originally assumed that FAT16 was the best way to proceed, but this time with a little more research I reformatted in FAT32 and reinstalled with the FAT32 kernel before seeing your reply. Thank you indeed for both your link to the FreeDOS1.1_test, and your offer to update that ISO (unofficially!). I look forward to simply upgrading this "FreeDOS4Kids" experiment with your update, script etc., when available. Thanks for the rapid kernel update tips too. The system I've cobbled together rapidly still needs polish in the FDconfig and FDauto - for example I've lost the CD-drive for the moment - but this time around haven't installed JEMM and all the games I've re-installed seem to be working fine, and with SB16 sound, using Boot Option 2 - "Load FreeDOS with EMM386+EMS and SHARE". I'm going through the online notes on FreeDos (and JEMMEX) memory allocation to ensure the best default configuration for all/most games, but I admit I'm confused and will have to work through it again from first principles (paper and crayon), to understand it all properly... Strangely I've not been able to get DOSstart working in this refurbished environment. I hope that I don't offend any FreeDOS contributors, but I found DOSstart much easier to use than GEM. Albeit DOSstart ran very slowly for me previously, probably as I didn't have some sort of cache loaded, as recommended by the author Daniel Nice (http://www.icdc.com/~dnice/dosstart.html). Still figuring that one out.
Now using Access 5.02RC - again you are correct Bernd I just install it on the hard-drive - unzip the downloaded file and run a Setup file in a C:\XX directory - with the pre-existing FreeDOS build and load it as a shell for the kids automatically, my FDauto.bat ending with: ...SET PATH=C:\XX C:\XX\XX.BAT With a batch file that comes with Access, I've now been able to load some 700 additional game icons to the menu system (from "myicons.zip" I found on the MSFN forum years ago), and am looking to experiment with additional cache-loading options that Ronald Blankendaal has engineered in his Access shell, for specific functions (games). In recent email communication with Ronald he regretted not having the time to continue it at present as he is devoted to DBGL (DosBox Games Launcher), but I'm sure that he would be happy to volunteer the source-code to anyone serious about updating his efforts there.
