Dosbox is an emulator that emulates an x86 processor and PC hardware. In this way, it is similar to qemu or bochs. It goes one step beyond in that they added to the emulator a DOS-like interface that maps the native file system into the DOS system calls, as well as the remaining DOS and BIOS system calls.
"Sound blaster" refers to a set of ISA boards that were manufactured in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These cards were backward compatible in both hardware and API. The most common was the Sound Blaster 16 (SB-16) that emulators like dosbox, qemu and bochs emulate and map into the host operating system API. This is why the program recognizes sound blaster in dosbox. Most likely, your sound hardware is not SB-16 compatible, which explains why the program does not recognize your sound subsystem. Mpxplay is capable of recognizing many more cards, including Intel ICH (PC97) and Intel HDA which is common on most recent computers.
