Hi Michael, > I have Warcraft I where I'd like to be able to play the sound. > The game itself does not support my sound card. Surely, dos > games aren't limited to the sound cards they were written for.
Does anybody have experience with the driver interface used by that game? Maybe it does support changeable drivers... > Couldn't someone write a driver for my sound card that emulates > a sound blaster? I like running freedos natively because dosbox That would not really be a driver, but SBPCI and SBLive come with similar software indeed... They use protected mode to trap attempts to access soundblaster and grab the audio data that way, so they can forward it to the actual non-SB card. So yes it can be done. There is a similar free/open software called VSB (Virtual Sound Blaster) but I think it only does emulate a soundblaster 1.0 or so, and only supports a very small number of actual soundcards (Covox at printer port?). Still might be useful as starting point :-). > on top of X does not fill the screen and there is no way to > expand the window. You can try Dosemu, Bochs, Qemu... In particular Dosemu is quite fast compared to other systems because it lets DOS use your real CPU, not a plain emulation. It does emulate a soundcard, too :-).
