It would have to, but hardware is not required. Remember ram doubler from (quarterdeck?) or any number of other products that did the same thing (can't recall names off the top of my head at the moment) but it was generally decided that the ram savings wasn't worth the compress/ decompress time. I'd wager with todays faster cpus, and faster ram access, a project like that could work just fine.
