As said - you cannot. If you have a diskette drive, things would be easier. But for changing the CD, you have to edit the virtual diskette on the CD, because the "normal CD" part of the CD cannot be used before DOS CD drivers like SHSUCDX (similar to MSCDEX) are loaded. Because those are loaded in config / autoexec, the config and autoexec must be on the virtual diskette, not in the "normal CD" part, sorry :-).
Eric I do have a 3 1/2 inch floppy drive but I thought that booting from the CD or DVD would be better. Again I was wrong, believe me not the first time. OK I am going to boot from the floppy drive so what do I need to do to boot from my floppy drive? Do I still need the CD in the CD drive? I thought since it was mentioned it was like MS DOS 5 that it would be like it in every detail and I guess this is another opinion I have that was wrong. You guys must have meant the commands or close to the same not the kernel. I thought I could change the autoexec.bat and config.sys and I would be OK, guess not. OK can you direct me in what I need to download to get Freedos to boot from my floppy and run. The reason why I can't see my hard drives is "and I found this out from you guys" they are formatted as NTFS Not FAT so I did find that out. Don't get me wrong I was able to boot FreeDos from the CD but there were 2 statements that made the boot hang so I found out what they were and using the step I by-passed loading them. I thought heck all I need to do is find those statements on the CD in the autoexec.bat or config.sys and change them and other than Freedos not seeing my 2 hard drives I'm close to being ablew to run Freedos. As you may have guessed I really want to run dos again on this machine and I don't have another I can just set aside to run dos nor can I take a chance and make this machine unusable in windows Vista Ultimate. Eric I really thank you guys for helping and I'm learning more and more each day. I know it has to be painful for you guys that know the kernel and operation of FreeDos so well so please forgive my lack of knowledge but I am getting there. It really would be nice if you guys could make it boot and run from the CD but as I said I did get it to boot and I was in FreeDos just had to step over a couple of statements so I guess I did get some where PS: It would be possible to make a "SYS" which can boot the FreeDOS kernel from CD, but then you still have the problem that the kernel cannot load SHSUCDX from CD because it needs SHSUCDX to access files on the CD. The kernel does not have to access itself as a file, it just "is" / it just lives in RAM working memory after the boot loader put it there. See you made a statement above that I don't understand. I know you know but I thought if you guys were into the guts of this thing and I know you are you could make it do anything. Why can't it load SHSUCDX from the CD so this file or program is the loader for the other files FD needs to run right? Is it just a loader for the other files? So SHSUCDX has to be somewhere else beside the CD say it could be on the 3 1/2 inch floppy right and that would solve that problem right. If so I'm closer than I thought. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges.
