I am confused here. I installed FreeDOS 1.0 Full on a 10-year Dell. 
These directories are not on the C: drive. So I looked on the FreeDOS 
1.0 Full CD-R I had burned from a downloaded .iso file. Apparently 
%DOSDIR% has two values*!*

I found a directory \FDOS\appinfo, which has only one file (exe2bin.lsm, 
which looks like what you are talking about in this thread). I found a 
directory \FreeDOS\packages, which has many files, whose names and 
contents remind me of the installation process. (I just went ahead and 
installed everything — space is not an issue.)

Just pointing out that at least some of the distro discs do not match 
the description above.
