Eric was right though about having to look up the documentation of OpenGEM (creating icons for files, running batch file scripts directly) on its own website: http://gem.shaneland.co.uk/ Essentially, OpenGEM is an add-on to any DOS, and the only reason it's included in a bigger FreeDOS release is due to its licensing terms which allow redistribution.
As for the more than 1 year old FreeDOS distribution, we know it tends to hang on trying to get internet access. Somehow there's issues with DHCP then (trying to get an internet/network address assigned automatically from a router or other server). That will be changed sometime. For now, people are working on updating programs rather than the installation scripts. Thanks for your mail to this list, and goodluck finding a solution to make your graphical user interface a bit more usable.
