I don't know if GRUB works like this, but i found this worked with LILO - boot up with the installation disk, boot into the rescue console, mount hard drive partitions, cd /mnt/"hard drive root partition", chroot /mnt/"hard drive root partition" and run lilo. That put lilo back onto the MBR, As I say, this works with LILO.
