Way too complicated, simply use dosemu instead of qemu :-).

Dosemu is 1. much faster than qemu and 2. you can run it in plain
text mode if you want a low bandwidth way to start it from a remote
connection to your Linux box. However, I recommend using X mode
(xdosemu) with support for graphics. You can do that with the usual
X forwarding feature of ssh. Of course your remote client has to
run an X server in that case.
