thanks for all the suggestions. It turned out that NTFS4DOS
(www.datapol.de) is the culprit. Even with the latest version from the
web site I get a fancy error message. With latest kernel and ntfs4dos,
the crashes seem to be gone away, but the misbehaviour is still there:
NTFS4DOS lists all partitions, but the tenth entry is just wrong (even
wrong partition type), and there seems to be a nifty memory corruption
as there is suddenly a spurious /Y on the NTFS4DOS command line which it
complains about (because it does not know this option), but this /Y
stems from a line in autoexec.bat which has nothing to do with the call
to NTFS4DOS. This plays nicely with the error message "not enough DCBs".
I have a nice screenshot summing up the problem. I will put it online
later if anybody is interested in it :)
