Simply speaking, two major working set for DOS:

1) Waterloo TCP utilities, a bunch of small programs such as ping, ftp
and Arachne ... this one need a PACKET DRIVER

2) Microsoft's LAN Manager, this is for connecting Windows network or
SAMBA with TCP/IP, you need a NDIS2 DRIVER
