ok, this is clearly a Mozilla Thunderbird (1.06) bug then.
it converts the string you mentioned, being:
ftp.devoresoftware.com\downloads\emm386
to: ftp://ftp.devoresoftware.com/downloads/emm386
..which is NOT accepted by neither IE and Firefox browser.
but indeed directly entering
ftp.devoresoftware.com\downloads\emm386
at the browser works, as the browser itself transforms the address into
a proper URL before opening it.
No idea how Eudora or Outlook (Express) behave, I just directly click on
the email link.
