I've played a little with FreeDOS and NOT using UMBPCI. I found that the
extender we use in the standard package (DOS/32) doesn't fit together with
EMM386 well. I changed the extender to CAUSEWAY and now I get 612KB lower
memory free.
Haven't generally found a problem with DOS/32A (current versions) and
EMM386 except requiring no more than 256M VCPI, but I won't argue with
anything using CauseWay. NTFS4DOS also works with DOS/4GW, for those who
are enamored of that particular extender. You don't necessarily have to
unbind the EXE, but can override on the command line with the executable
stub of CauseWay or DOS/4GW or extender flavor of choice.
Wonder if they're using the latest DOS/32A. Still haven't figured out that
extender's problem with high VCPI memory counts.
