Firstly, thanks to everyone who answered.

I found details on unzipsfx at the Unzip website and downloaded a more 
up-to-date unzip and zip than I had been using before.

I'll try arj as well - back when DOS was the only thing I had on my PC, I 
remember it as a good program.
