In a way some did, those 8086/88-80186 used expanded memory ISA cards which most were not compatible with standard requiring own driver.

Is there any use nowadays for this hardware? yes, some are still produce system on chip 80186.
When I get nxdos done I'll just upload it to someplace like simtel for free, as I dont see anyone having any interest in a dos clone written 99% in 286p asm...
