I did a little bit more testings about the CHDIR-Problem in the meantime:
o It even does not work with not physically existing drive letters (e. g.
M:).
o The Bug is NOT in SUBST.EXE. I booted MS-DOS and replaced there the
SUBST.EXE with the one from FreeDOS and did my subst example. The warning
'SUBST: Warning physical path D:\ cannot be made' stays, but everything
works!
o The Bug is even NOT in COMMAND.COM. I booted MS-DOS with the COMMAND.COM
from FreeDOS and did my subst example. There were a few warnings, but the
subst command works.
