Hi there, I just found FreeDOS the other night, and started playing with it. I'm an old DOS user starting with 3.3 or something and "getting old" with the later versions, including 4Dos. It's nice to see people actually can write appearantly better software than Mickey did. Smaller, faster, and more functionality. Wish they did that with Windows too... But I'm drifting.
I'm installing FreeDos (latest version, beta9 pre-release5 with kernel build 2034 32bits on a Dell Inspiron 4000 (Celeron 600, 192MB RAM, 10G HD)) on a small 23MB primary partition. It's actually the second of four directly after a 40MB DOS 6.22 partition. It boots fine and the software I've tried so far (Vorton Commander, PQMagic, DriveImagePro) seems to run fine. However, I'm having trouble installing devicedrivers in either config.sys or fdconfig.sys. Trying to free some precious 640kB DOS mem I tried to load fdxms.sys, fdxxms.sys (together, separate, no difference) but the system keeps giving me an error during boot that the line: >>>device=fdxms.sys isn't correct. There's a small thingie pointing underneath pointing to the "=", but all I've tried hasn't helped much. From what I've been able to find, syntax isn't the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm gonna try it on different machines this week, but I would really like to get it going on my own machine. Other than that, I'm impressed. Did I mention I like the size of it all? Good stuff. Thanx!
