Hi, trying to recall which games run in FreeDOS and which do not...
all shareware or freeware:

Descent: yes, but only with DOS32A, not with standard DOS4GW. Did not try
with EMM386 yet (none of the games!), using UMBPCI instead.
Terminal Velocity (comes with S3 Virge graphics cards): Had some troubles
with that one, but only runs on S3 Virge in that version anyway, not common.
Bananoid: Runs fine but the graphics mode gives older xdos (Dosemu) a headache.
Playable but incorrect display in 1.1.3.7 for example. Cannot check on newer
versions of dosemu in the next weeks, sorry.
Brkfree: This 3d arkanoid clone works but needs lots of free DOS RAM.
Laserbeam: I think this works, but only if the directory is writeable. Do not
play it often (nag screen and not very good game either).
Shooting Gallery: the MCGA BGI (vga256) crashes in Dosemu 1.1.3.7 but you
should test it in plain DOS to know more.
20th Century Frog: works but the directory must be writeable.
Ballgame: No Adlib in dosemu. Somewhat slow there. But works.
Mahjongg (version by Nels Anderson): No mouse cursor visible in Dosemu, did
not try in plain DOS and do not know how to get a good score anyway :-).
Kalaha: The Adlib music is worth playing this in plain DOS (because Dosemu
does not support Adlib sound yet)...
Kamango (a memory clone): Only works in a writeable directory. A bit slow in
Dosemu. I am trying this on a slow (120-150 MHz CPU with old xdosemu 1.1.3.7
  only) computer.
Ant21 (AI / genetic algorithm simulation thing): Works fine.
CellMaster (AI / cellular automaton thing): ClamAV.net flags this as possible
virus, and there annoying display errors in Dosemu. But as far as I remember
it runs okay in plain FreeDOS.
Brix: Nice game, runs okay in Dosemu :-).
Did not test the sound in Dosemu, though.
E-Motion: "emot v" does not seem to work in Dosemu. You may want to try in
  plain FreeDOS.
Klotz: Works fine even in Dosemu.
Moleculix (Atomix clone): Directory has to be writeable. A bit slow in
Dosemu. Works fine otherwise. Freeware as far as I know. For the others:
Descent is "get more levels when you register" shareware, Bananoid is a
freeware Arkanoid style game with only a few levels but 256 colors VGA,
Brkfree is "get more levels when you register" shareware, Laserbeam is
"remove nagscreen and get more levels by registering" shareware, Shooting
Gallery is "you should register" shareware, 20th Century Frog is... hm...
freeware? Maybe shareware, cannot find the *rder f*rm. Ballgame is share-
ware, I think. Mahjongg is "if you like it give me $10" shareware. Kamango
is "if you register you get more features/levels" shareware. Kalaha (very
nice game, calls itself Wari) is "if you register you get stronger AI
opponents" shareware. Ant21 is copyrighted freeware. CellMaster is a
stripped down freeware variant of some buyware version.
Brix (from the Baron Baldric / E! author) is shareware with a "do not
bundle with other software" license with "you must pay if you like it"
and "get more levels when you register"... E-Motion is... hm, dunno.
Klotz is "please register if you like it" shareware.
Squarez: Fun game, shareware, get more levels / features by registering,
should register if you like it style license. Works okay in FreeDOS and
Dosemu (did not test the sound there).

Oookay. This is getting a bit boring, so here a shorter summary of my other
collected games. Assume that they all work in plain FreeDOS and most work
in Dosemu as well although probably with limited sound or if the directory
is writeable.

Go Partner, IGo, TMWGo, AuGos (needs a writeable directory, DPMI16BI, so it
crashes if a ramdisk is present - newer Windows version of AuGoS work okay
  in Wine. This is freeware.
Crystal Caves (needs a writeable directory), Jazz Jackrabbit (cool game, but
DPMI16BI - see above - and graphics only work fine in very new Dosemu...
and of course in plain FreeDOS), Jill of the Jungle, Commander Keen 1 / 4,
Lemmings 3d (some sound settings need EMS for which I usually use DR DOS
emm386, should eventually try with our new VCPI enabled EMM38664!), Mario
(a tiny freeware and by now even open source Super Mario clone which I
have mirrored on my homepage / Dosemu has sprite display problems). All of
the Go and platform (jump and run) games mentioned - except Mario and AuGoS
of course - are "get more levels" (j&r) or "get newer version" shareware.
I think GoPartner or IGo is limited to small boards unless you register.
TMWGo is text mode as far as I remember, with interesting calcluation progress
  display modes available.
Tankwars: Shareware (should register, dunno what you get for registering...),
  works okay.
VPool: This 3d billiard is a bit reluctant to run in Dosemu. Not sure if it
runs in plain FreeDOS, please try. Shareware.
1994pool: this fun billiard variant works okay in FreeDOS.
Small games: Kong, EGAroids, MMind (MasterMind), Pacman, PCMan, Tetris, Tron,
TTT (3d tic tac toe), ...: All work in FreeDOS as far as I remember but some
  have display problems in Dosemu.

Please check http://www.coli.uni-sb.de/~eric/stuff/soft/dosemu/ and
http://www.coli.uni-sb.de/~eric/stuff/soft/dos-ega/ for some samples
and problem reports for DOSEmu 1.1.3.7 and please let me know which of
the problems are solved in newest DOSEmu versions. Thanks.

Corewars, T-Robots: okay in FreeDOS...
Raptor (2d scrolling space shooter): Sound hangs in older Dosemu, maybe
an Adlib problem. Not sure if it works in newer Dosemu. Okay in FreeDOS.
Xonix: Too fast but works (Antix is ann alternative in this case, yet another
Qix clone: walk around and cut pieces out of the playing field...).
SWH: Hercules (HGC) starwars type game (fly around shooting each other, a
two player game, quite old and simple), does not work in Dosemu yet because
it needs a real 64k HGC card. Does not work on VGA either, obviously. Only
my old ISA VGA with hardware HGC emulation worked :-(.
AST: Uses 160x100 or 128x128 16 color "text mode based" CGA mode, so it only
works on very compatible cards. I think I once modified this for VGA.
  Yet another Asteroids type game.
Digger (DigDug): CGA, you cannot leave without rebooting, but works at least
  in plain DOS afair.
Alleycat: This IBM classic works in FreeDOS, of course :-). I think even on
quite fast PCs the timing is still okay!
Sint: This santa clause jump and run works okay in plain FreeDOS but I never
  get really far.
Captain Comic: This very old jump and run game works at least in plain FreeDOS.

Phew! I do not have much more games around. Or course I might have deleted
some because they did not run in FreeDOS, but I remember that this only happens
rarely, if at all. I deleted more because I did not like the licenses. And I
remember that more games break in Win98 DOS than in FreeDOS when migrating a
PC away from MS DOS 6...!

Eric.
