This is the total record of what all was wrong with my computer at the time I wrote my previous post:
Both hard drive bootsectors contained 512 root dir entries. Not 0, like they are supposed to. 512. FreeDOS bootsectors indicated that the machine should check the master boot record for which hard drive to go to. My Master Boot Record was completely fudged in some way. result: We fixed the 512 root dir entries, and consequently broke FreeDOS. Not only that but Metakern bootloading would not work. We finally fixed the problems with the machine contacting the MBR -- and everything's fixed. Eric, thanks a lot for working so patiently with me, we've discovered the first invalid MBR. Thanks to this little endeavor, SYS will be getting a few extra options.
