Hi, I have been using freedombox at home this year and like the concept. Do you think there is any interest in additional small form factor hardware to run freedombox?
I work for a manufacturer, and we have designed SBC-like hardware for our own products. I think this hardware could make a really good option to run freedombox because the processor is targeted for home gateway applications. The processor is LS1021A from NXP and has interesting peripherals -- 3 gigabit Ethernet interfaces, *USB 3.0 PCIe 2.0, SATA, hardware crypto engine*). Our design brings all these interfaces out except for one of the Ethernet interfaces. The processor board has 1 GB memory and a microSD slot. I call ours SBC-like because it actually has multiple-boards. A carrier board, processor board, and dual-GbE board. There is no Wifi at this point, but in theory this could be added internally using PCIe mini connector or externally with USB. We do not have a case for it. I have not seen the DreamPlug first-hand, but it seems similar. We already have the boards designed and running Linux (not Debian). I am open to suggestions on how to make this a really good option. For example, maybe it would be interesting to buy as just a processor card that could be customized by other hardware hackers. My main interest is to increase consumption of the processor and/or other boards to get lower cost that comes with scale. If we get lower cost and the community can get a good home server, it seems like a win-win. I assume most simply use old PCs (like I have). but I know I would be interested in small, low-power home-server. I see the Danube edition box planned. It may be a better option, but I'm happy to learn if there is a need. Cheers, Jeremy -- Jeremy Thien Adtec Digital adtecdigital.com [email protected]
