Tim, You can access files hosted on your freedombox using Owncloud or SFTP. Or least that is the primary way I have heard people talking about getting files on and off the box. If you want to use Samba with your freedombox the best thing to do would be to create a "plinth application." Since samba is already packaged for debian, the hard part of integrating it with freedombox is already done.
There is a pretty good tutorial/documentation on how to create a plinth application on the wiki.
