Follow-up Comment #25, bug #25336 (project freeciv):

Options-->Local Client--> (Bedienung) Usage -->
 "Pop up attack questions" is unset.

If I set it on, keyboard "G" goto opens the popup, I can choose "conquer", and
alpine troops enter the city.

Not sure the resulting behaviour is what was intended by the programmer.

Also note, that I get an assertion, if I try to conquer the city, if the
option is unset:

1: in handle_unit_actions() [packhand.c::4597]: assertion
'action_id_get_target_kind(auto_action) == ATK_TILE ||
action_id_get_target_kind(auto_action) == ATK_UNITS' failed.

Option help says:

If this option is enabled, when a unit arrives at a
target it can attack, a window will pop up asking
which action should be performed even if an attack
action is legal and no other interesting action are.
This allows you to change you mind or to select an
uninteresting action.

If conquer is a legal attack replacement action, it should be auto-performed.
If it is not, the popup should happen anyway.

But if I collect the discussion correctly, the developers cannot reproduce,
that the popup does not appear. Maybe you can now?
