"The Cholas were a Tamil dynasty centered in southern India and were
rare in "
"their level of influence in northern India. They began as a tributary
state "
"to the Pallavas, but in the 9th century their power began to grow.
During "
"the 11th century, they led expeditions against other Indian states as
far "
"north as Bengal, as well as against the Maldives, Sri Lanka and even
the "
"Indonesian kingdom of Sri Vijaya. They collapsed, however, in the 1250s
as "
"other southern Indian states rose up."
What does "were rare in their level of influence" really mean? From
Wikipedia, I get the impression they mostly ruled southern India, so
does it mean they had little influence, or, as it literally means (I
think), were somehow unusually influential in northern India?
