I run an old version of OpenBSD; I have the same problem with OpenBSD 'sed'.
$ echo EXAMPLE.SVG | sed 's/.svg$//i'
sed: 1: "s/.svg$//i": bad flag in substitute command: 'i'
$ echo EXAMPLE.SVG | sed 's/.[Ss][Vv][Gg]$//'
EXAMPLE
I never encountered this bug because I never use the convert_png script.
