[Top post going in a somewhat different direction. Plus I listed the wrong version for bintils, not 6.4, but 2.30 .]
I probably should have referenced the line in base/binutils/Makefile : MASTERDIR= ${.CURDIR}/../../devel/binutils which in turn brings in references for all the direct dependencies that devel/binutils normally has, such as seen via freshports. This is how things that are missing up front end up with an attempt to build them. I do not see anything that effectively would say "disable the dependencies that devel/binutils indicates".
