GCC 4.8 is a little old, and most likely won't attract attention
by upstream developers.
Does this reproduce with newer version such as GCC 5? If so, that
would make a report with higher chances of getting addressed. If
not, can you use such a newer version?

Yes (occurred on 5.2.1 originally), that's why I bumped back to 4.8.5, I
thought the newer development version might have some new 'features'
that were acting up ....
