About a year ago I created USB stick with GRUB instead of BTX loader for booting on CD-ROM less Sun Fire servers. It works well. So this is the possible way to go. You can create just bootable USB stick from miniboot ISO (30MB) and then install from internal CD-ROM or from network (FTP, NFS...). Or you can create completely working instalation media with packeges etc on USB stick bigger than 512MB.
