Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. Unfortunately it still doesn't explain why the file is not being created, the fact that the dd command is outputting a count for records out suggests to me that it *SHOULD* have been created but even doing a find across my /usr/src/sys/boot doesn't turn it up.
