I've only tried it a couple of times, but for me "shutdown -r now"
seems to reliably reboot the machine, but "shutdown -p now" seems to
reliably stop at the "Powering off..." message.

Let me know if you're sick of the 2950's, you can leave them on my
doorstep anytime.... ;)
