I have did several (50+) updates from 5.4-RELEASE to a custom build of
6.1-RELEASE through a similar way that Colin has posted on his
website[1].  Basically it's fairly safe to upgrade 5.4-R to 6.1-R by
either src/ update (src/UPDATING) or binary update way.

Note that if you want a "clean" system then you will want to do "make
delete-old" and "make delete-old-libs", you are advised to install
compat5x before removing the libraries.
