According to "man file" this is due to different magic files being used: -i Causes the file command to output mime type strings rather than [...] and makes use of an alternative magic file. (See FILES section, below). FILES /usr/share/misc/magic.mgc default compiled list of magic numbers /usr/share/misc/magic default list of magic numbers /usr/share/misc/magic.mime default list of magic numbers, used to output mime types when the -i option is specified.
