John started debugging this with another person with similar problems
on 5 and the debugging never got to 6 (no feedback from the other

I finally got around to testing John's last suggestion, and the modification allows me to boot a RELENG_6 kernel! So there is a "work around" at least on my DELL PE6350. Take a look at the thread on current for a full dmesg.
